Yesterday was Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Day and with all the indulgences in the world, it’s no wonder we need to spread the word on how to live longer and better lives. As is the case with every Feb. 22, wellness organizations everywhere acknowledge what people can do to have a balanced and thriving existence.
Here are some of the highlights that can help you achieve your wellness goals:
- Hold the Salt
Salt, although delicious, is a known catalyst for increasing blood pressure as well as other conditions. Too much salt can also lead to heart disease and stroke. One great way to lower salt intake is to avoid eating processed and fried foods. Try incorporating raw foods into your diet or eat as close to the food source as possible. That could mean if you’re hankering for a hamburger, skip the fries and opt for a salad.Or, if you’re looking to drastically improve your eating habits, just go for the salad.
- Beware of Too Much Booze
Although a nice glass of wine or beer is enjoyable, it’s important to not drink alcohol too much. Aside from the risk of dependency for some people, excessive alcohol consumption can damage internal organs, especially the liver. There’s nothing wrong with drinking alcohol if that’s your thing, but it would be good to know your limit and drink within it. If you do that, you could be around for many more years and many more beers.
- A Daily Dose of D
Every year, more information is released on how important Vitamin D is for the body. Not only does it comes from our one-and-only sun, there are many Vitamin D fortified foods and beverages out there, not to mention actual vitamin pills that can be purchased at any pharmacy.
- Move
Now that it’s 2018, it should be common knowledge that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy. But, in the age of the computer and television, sitting is our most common position. So at the risk of sounding too obvious, it’s important to move. This could mean going to the gym, playing sports you enjoy, or even something as simple as taking walks as often as possible for as long as you can. Any type of movement is better than no movement at all. Only turtles can get away with sitting for 100 years.
- The More We Get Together, The Happier We’ll Be
If you’re one of those people who like to remain isolated and alone, studies show you’re not doing yourself any favours. People who are married or who get together with friends and family as often as possible are shown to live longer, healthier lives. So even if you’re not prone to calling up your posse for a good time, by forcing yourself into social situations you may be doing yourself a solid. The more we get together the happier we’ll be, as the song goes.
